Good news today for Nigerian students and parents: the remaining 130 pupils and staff abducted from St Mary’s Catholic boarding school in Papiri, Niger State, have been fully rescued.

The kidnapping happened on November 21 one of the largest mass abductions in recent times. Over the past month, authorities secured phased releases: first 50 students escaped, then 100 more were freed earlier in December, and now the final 130 are safe and reunited with their families.

While this is a huge relief, school kidnappings remain a real fear across northern Nigeria. Many university students have younger siblings in secondary or primary schools, and these incidents hit close to home.

The government has stepped up security operations, but students and parents continue to call for stronger protection around schools and campuses nationwide.
